Will One Lens Change My Photography?

Probably. Since I got the Nikon 85mm f/1.4, I’ve kept it on the camera and kept the camera with me. Now, when I see the light – any light – I feel like I’m ready. Sure, when I shoot events or assignments I’ll use other lenses better suited to the circumstances, but the combination of the 85 1.4 and the Nikon D7000 inspires me to shoot impulsively, something I haven’t felt in far too long. Maybe next month I’ll feel this way about a wide-angle or macro lens, but for the moment, I feel like a kid rediscovering available light photography.

My daughter, on the back deck after dark, lit by her MacBook Pro. ISO 2500, f/1.4 at 1/160. I might rewrite the Tracy Chapman song: "You got a fast lens..."

  1. absolutely. depends on the person though. i find 85mm a bit too tight for what i mainly shoot, but definitely the speed must be inspiring
